There’s an old saying that goes something like “Those who can’t do, critique.” I have never sold a screenplay, never penned a novel, and never performed in any meaningful way in front of a crowd. I’m not an expert in anything, except maybe hamster-related puns and questionable stunt layouts. Having said all of that, I think about stories all the time. I think about characters, plots, concepts, and ideas pretty much every waking day of my life. I think about what makes good stories good, what makes bad stories bad, and the rare bits of enjoyment you can get out of each of them. I love storytelling in almost every form, from TV to movies to plays to games; the list is quite literally endless. Maybe there isn’t deep meaning, or insight, or value to every bit of media that’s ever been created. But there’s something to the story that every bit of media wants to tell; and personally, I think that has value.
The purpose of this blog is to collect my thoughts, ideas, and insights on what makes bits of storytelling work, and even finding the highlights of what makes bad stories compelling. I want to post what makes characters work, what makes stories work, and ideas of my own. I hope that if you’re reading this, you find insight in what is to come and what I have written so far; and regardless of either, thank you for your time. I look forward to seeing what becomes of my pet project.
My name is Nick, and this is WIP: Work In Progress; it is a collection of thoughts, ideas, and insights about the work that I do, and the progress I make, building towards something bigger and better.
